Launching Citizen Care 2.0 and Kids Care 2.0

Our Aam Sabha on 20th September launched Citizen Care 2.0 and Kids Care 2.0. The session was a very engaging one, marked by the participation of most of the people present. 🙂

While we have introduced more govt. schemes under the second version of our programme, the key improvement that we have made in this version is on the front of follow-up and ‘closing the loop’. Some beneficiaries of our Citizen Care and Kids Care programme also joined and shared with the audience, their experience of associating with us.

We also took this opportunity to reward the best performers of a drawing/sketching competition that we had organized on 15th August at one of our Sewing Training Centres.

Following Gandhiji’s Talisman

Almost every textbook in our school used to start with the following talisman by Gandhiji. Some of the books, in fact, had it in the beginning of every chapter. As we grew up and as we turned pages of the new chapters of life, our encounter with the Talisman gradually became less frequent, ultimately reducing at best to an annual event on Gandhi Jayanti. However, we at Seva Setu are determined with all humility to reverse this trend and make sure that not only this encounter becomes more frequent but eventually we become one with this principle.

“I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man/woman whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him/her. Will he/she gain anything by it? Will it restore him/her to a control over his/her life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to swaraj for the hungry and spiritually starving millions?
Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away.”

Keeping this ideal in view, we have launched an initiative on the ground whereby our field karykartas identify and interact with the most deprived familiy/families in any village of the area allotted to them. The identification and assessment has both objective and subjective elements in it. It is followed by an internal discussion in our team where we build a map of actions with timelines which, we believe, will help the identified families “get more control over their life and destiny”. This is followed by on ground execution of the map.

Under this initiative, the first family that we are closely working with, is of Suratpur village, Raja Pakar block, Vaishali District, Bihar. The identified family has only two people – Sri Heegan Ram, who is around 70 years old, and his wife, almost 60 years old. With no land or any other immovable property or assets, the family’s sole means of livelihood (till we met them) was the meager, irregular income that comes from working as labourers on other’s land. With age, this too has become very difficult for them. One of the sons of the family recently died under mysterious circumstances in Chandigarh. The other son seems to have deserted his family. After we started working with the family, the lady has become a part of our Sattu production team and now makes Rs. 1,000 per month through it. The family, with our handholding, has bought two goats now and we are working together with them to build a profitable and sustainable goat rearing business for their family.

With hope and resolve, we march on! Together 🙂

Stitching a Better Future | Launch of Sewing Centers

With a small sewing training center in Kewalla village, Manhiari block of‪#‎Katihar‬ district, we launched our field work there three weeks back. We share some pics from the newly launched center 🙂

An ‘Of the People, By the People, For the People’ initiative as the young girls and women from ‪#‎Vaishali‬, ‪#‎Patna‬, ‪#‎Samstipur‬ and #Katihar districts in ‪#‎Bihar‬, stitch a better future with us. Some stats relevant to our sewing initiative:

Locations: #Patna, #Vaishali, ‪#‎Samastipur‬ and #Katihar in Bihar
Total number of Sewing Training Centers: 13 (9 Active + 4 Looking for sufficient number of trainees to restart)
Number of young girls and women trained so far: 64
Number of young girls and women under training: 165
Units of Petticoats and Blouses stitched and sold so far: Around 6,000

A brief introduction to our sewing initiative:

We visit local communities, locate a skilled trainer (usually we always find one within the community itself), canvass potential trainees and after few rounds of discussion, we agree on a convenient place within the community itself to launch the sewing training center. We provide Rs. 7,000 as seed capital (The cost of Sewing Machine + Accessories Cost). Post that, we connect them to the wholesalers/retailers who buy stitched petticoats and blouses. Young girls and women get hands on experience in stitching and sewing. After the training hours, they enthusiastically work to produce for the orders received and deliver within committed timelines. With the capital provided for training and the revenue generated by selling finished products, the sewing center and participants earn enough not only to sustain but also pocket some regular profits on a regular basis.

A workshop on ‘How to use TABS’ by WHP | TB Awareness and Cure

It is been a little more than 2 months that we have been working in collaboration with ‪#‎WHP‬(World Health Partners) on TB identification, prevention and correction in ‪#‎Phulwarisharif‬ and ‪#‎Danapur‬ blocks of ‪#‎Patna‬ distict, ‪#‎Bihar‬.
Our volunteers were carrying out most of the work till recently, manually (i.e. using pen, paper etc.) However, on the basis of our recent work on the field, the experiences associated, and further discussions with the WHP team, WHP has agreed to provide TABS to selected volunteers, to carry out the work on the ground. This will ease data recording, tracking, and management for the TB-related work being carried out on the ground.

Here are some images of the training session conducted by the WHP team for our volunteers and field workers on the ground.

This workshop has helped in introducing our volunteers to the “operational guidelines” for using these smart TABS. Our volunteers and field workers are pretty excited about using  these newly introduced tools!!

Stitching a Better Future | Sewing Training at Vaishali‬, ‎Patna‬ and ‪‎Samstipur‬, Bihar

‪#‎OfthePeopleBythePeopleForthePeople‬, as the young girls and women from‪ ‎#Vaishali‬, ‪#‎Patna‬ and ‪#‎Samstipur‬ districts in ‪#‎Bihar‬, stitch a better future with us.

Some numbers below, for the statistically minded:
Locations: #Patna, #Vaishali and ‪#‎Samastipur‬ in Bihar.
Total number of Sewing Centers: 10 (7 Active + 3 Looking for sufficient number of trainees to restart)
Number of young girls and women trained so far: 56
Number of young girls and women under training: 98
Units Stitched and Sold: Around 4,000

The Good Part: Small groups, easily accessible training centers (as they are within the community, often within walking distance), trainees become trainers, and start on their own as well. Trained girls and women can work from home to run their own local business of sewing and stitching. This can be set up easily and is quickly scalable.

The Best Part: The immense satisfaction that we derive and the happy, confident, financially independent (at least to an extent), happy young girls and women!

Here are some pics from our sewing center in #Samastipur
